It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewellery quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewellery manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewellery trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewellery valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.
The art of mixing and matching earrings opens up a world of creative possibilities. Far more than just pairing pieces that match earrings traditionally, this approach lets you craft a signature look that's uniquely yours. At Diamonds Factory, we're passionate about helping you match jewellery in ways that showcase your personality. Our collection of versatile diamond earrings makes it effortless to experiment with different combinations, whether you prefer subtle elegance or bold statements.
Why Mixing And Matching Earrings Is A Must-Try Trend
Gone are the days when matching earrings meant wearing identical pairs. Today's jewellery trends embrace asymmetry and unexpected combinations, celebrating personal style in refreshing new ways. Fashion-forward women are discovering the joy of curating their own ear stories, mixing modern earrings with vintage-inspired pieces to create looks that feel both current and timeless.
This shift towards creative style matching isn't just about following trends—it's about expressing yourself through carefully chosen combinations. A delicate diamond stud might dance with a bold drop earring, or a cluster of petit studs might cascade alongside a sleek hoop. The possibilities are endless, and that's exactly what makes this approach so exciting.
The Basics Of Mixing And Matching Earrings
Balancing Shapes And Sizes
The secret to mastering mismatched earrings lies in finding harmony between different pieces. Consider pairing a petite stud earring with something more dramatic—perhaps one of our signature diamond earrings alongside a graceful drop design. The key is creating visual interest while maintaining balance. A classic solitaire stud, for instance, beautifully complements a more elaborate piece without overwhelming your overall look.
When selecting pieces to combine, consider their proportions carefully. A graduated approach often works beautifully—start with a delicate piece near the lobe and build up to slightly larger designs. This creates a natural flow that draws the eye upward and adds sophistication to your look.
Playing With Metals
Don't shy away from mixing your metals—it's a sophisticated way to add depth to your style. White gold can sing alongside rose gold, while yellow gold adds warmth to any combination. Our collection offers plenty of options to experiment with, from classic two-tone pieces to bold tri-metal designs. Try pairing a white-gold diamond stud with a rose gold drop earring for a contemporary twist on traditional styling.
Remember that metal mixing isn't just about the earrings themselves—consider how your choices complement other pieces like diamond pendants or favourite necklaces. A thoughtfully coordinated approach helps tie your entire look together while maintaining that coveted element of surprise.
Experimenting With Colours And Gemstones
Why limit yourself to one type of stone? Our diamond pendants and earrings come alive when thoughtfully paired with coloured gemstones. A sapphire drop earring might find its perfect match in a classic diamond stud, while ruby accents can add a passionate pop of colour to your ear party. The trick is finding combinations that complement rather than compete.
For those new to mixing coloured stones, start with complementary hues or stick to a single colour family. Blues and greens create a serene palette, while mixing various shades of pink can add warmth to your look. Our diamond bracelets can help tie these colour stories together beautifully.
Tips For Matching Earrings With Outfits And Occasions
Common Mistakes To Avoid When Mixing Earrings
While experimenting is encouraged, a few guidelines can help you avoid common pitfalls. First, resist the urge to wear too many statement pieces at once—let one dramatic earring take the spotlight while its partner plays a supporting role. Pay attention to proportion and weight, ensuring your combinations feel balanced rather than chaotic.
